Every World Cup, soccer fans have their predictions on who’s going to win certain matches, every single time someone is proven wrong. The 2022 World Cup was no exception, having some of the craziest moments in sports history. Here are some of the most notable games, leaving you on the edge of your seats for 90 minutes.
Argentina was one of the most commonly picked teams to win the World Cup, having Lionel Messi, a forward for their starting 11, who’s widely regarded as one of the best soccer players of all time. Having their first game against Saudi Arabia, who were ranked 49th spot according to FIFA, led fans to believe that it was an easy game for the Southern American team. The game started out as expected, as the midfielder Paredes was tackled inside of the box earning Argentina a penalty shot. Messi was called up to take the penalty, scoring and putting Argentina 1-0 until half time due to the many offside goals. Argentina didn’t have the lead for a while as the Saudis scored 2 goals in 5 minutes, the world stood shocked as they saw Argentina hughley underperforming till the 90th minute leaving the score at 2-1.
While Germany wasn’t a top pick as one of the strongest teams, fans certainly thought they would be advancing out of the group stage to the round of 16 having Japan and Costa Rica in their group. It started out that way in their starting game, scoring a penalty kick against Japan in the first half. The game remained 1-0 until the Japanese team scored 2 quick goals against Germany and one of the best goalies of all time, which ended the game at 2-1.
Morocco was believed to have absolutely no chance, being predicted to lose all 3 of their games and get sent home after the group stage rounds. To everyone’s surprise, they made it out first and went to reach the Semi-Finals losing to former champions France being the first ever African country to make it that far. Their run was unbelievable beating the likes of Spain and Portugal, teams who were known for their solid players and all around popular connection with soccer. Although they didn’t win, they will be remembered throughout history for having one of the best underdog stories.
Having lost their first game to Sauida Arabia, Argentina showed an improvement in their playmaking ability. This led them all the way to the finals against the former champions, France. Although it wasn’t very clear on who’s going to take the trophy home, it made it that much more thrilling to watch. The stakes were high as the world was about to experience if Messi would get his hands on his first World Cup trophy, or if the former champions were going to keep the title.
The game started out very well for the Argentinian team, as they scored 2 goals just in the first half. But to their surprise, this wouldn’t last long. Kylian Mbappe, a 24 year old lethal striker for the french team who’s been crucial for their great performance, didn’t disappoint. He scored a shocking 2 goals in 2 minutes, which included a volley leaving your jaw dropped on the floor. The tie carried into the extra time, which was also filled with amazing performances. Messi scored a close call goal with a ball barely entering the net. Mbappe didn’t quite score a penalty kick for the french team after a handball call, making him the first ever player to score a hat trick in a World Cup final. The game finally ended at a close penalty shoot off which resulted 4-2, securing Argentina their World Cup trophy.
