Living in a perfect land as the perfect being is a fantasy we’ve all dreamed about. Everyone knows the quintessential pink and blushing character known as Barbie. Of course, it’s great to imagine living her life, but now you don’t have to. Director Greta Gerwig is releasing another big hit with the Barbie live-action film officially coming to the big screen, and we are loving the hype.

Set to release July 21, the fantasy-comedy film will showcase at least 10 different versions of Barbie and Ken. This may sound like a lot, but knowing Greta Gerwig, and her out-of-the-box ideas, it’ll go beyond our expectations. Gerwig has a history of immersing herself in her movie sets to make it feel all the more real. She sports pink jumpsuits and other brightly colored pieces while on set. Her filmography includes movies like Little Women, Lady Bird and Nights and Weekends, all of which have left their audiences in varying states of emotion. Gerwig’s husband, Noah Baumbach, is assisting with this film by writing the screenplay. His best-known success is Marriage Story, a romance drama; Gerwig and Baumbach combined are sure to knock the movie ratings through the roof.

With actors such as Margot Robbie playing the original Barbie, Dua Lipa playing Mermaid Barbie, Issa Rae as President Barbie and many more such as lawyer, doctor, physicist and even Supreme Court Justice Barbie, fans are raving about the cast, including the famous Ryan Gosling, who plays Ken. Gosling is the perfect fit for himbo icon, Ken. The head-empty acting brings the exact doll-like charm we know and love. In a viral clip from the trailer, he suggests sleeping over with Barbie, his reasoning being, “Because we’re girlfriend boyfriend…” and nothing else. As Barbie asks what they’ll do, they both just blink thoughtlessly at each other.

Another face we are all excited to see in the Barbie cast is The Michael Cera, who is playing Allen, Ken’s boy best friend. The real dolls are the same size, meaning their clothes are interchangeable, and in the movie, they swap clothes, as well. Some might speculate they are more than boy best friends… but that can be decided after we watch.

During interviews with Gerwig and Baumbach, they expressed how hilarious this film will be. A Vulture article “Greta Gerwig Barbie World Keeps Getting Bigger,” written by Jason P. Frank and Ashley Shannon Wu, supports that idea.

“It’s safe to assume these icons of mumblecore are going to weird it up somehow,” they write. “Gerwig also revealed that, during the writing of the movie’s script with Baumbach, ‘we were making each other laugh all the time, and it got to the point where we were making each other cry.”’
