The girls’ wrestling season has just ended, totalling to five events.
The first event the team attended was the Tyrone S. Woods Memorial Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 2, hosted by Oregon City High School, where 20 other schools competed, as well.
The closing event for the season was a dual meet with Tigard High School, hosted by them on Thursday, Feb. 1.
TuHS junior Makayla Dye is the team captain.
“[I became the captain by being] the most experienced person, as of right now, for the girls, and I am the most determined. I am trying to wrestle in college, so my coach said that I can be the captain this year and next year,” Dye shared.
Dye was originally a stats girl who observed and marked the scoring for matches. She has never looked back since joining the team and has had a wonderful experience so far.
“This season, I placed second in three of my tournaments that I have been in,” Dye said. “I wasn’t able to make it to state. I lost before I went to my placing match, but all in all, it was learning.”
Overall, Dye said this season was a learning curve, as many of the wrestlers were new to the team and a lot of people are graduating.
“Next year’s season, my expectations are to be a state champion, but I would not mind being a state placer and going to a college in the midwest somewhere,” Dye added.
For next year’s season, the girls’ wrestling team will be in need of dedicated athletes who have interest in learning how to wrestle.
“Totally come out,” Dye said. “It’s beautiful. The team’s so welcoming. A woman wrestling coach will be there to support you.”
