The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is known for its rigorous curriculum and challenging assessments. Preparing for the IB exams may seem scary, but for Helayna Sy, a senior IB Diploma student at Tualatin High School, it’s all about finding the right balance between study and self-care.
“I don’t really have a strategy,” Sy said. “I try to refresh my memory before exams by reading through my notes from class and then watching Khan Academy videos or other YouTube videos that will help me refresh my memory on a topic I remember little about.”
For Sy, online resources play a crucial role in her study routine.
“I Definitely watch videos online or use online resources specifically made for IB exam testing prep,” she emphasized as she reflected on the importance of other resources in aiding her understanding of complex topics.
Dealing with exam stress and anxiety is an unavoidable part of the IB journey for each student, but Sy has found ways to help with that.
“Since the school lets you take the rest of the day off on the day you have an IB exam, I definitely take advantage of that,” she said. “I use that extra time to prep for my next IB exam and get rest!”
Math poses a challenge for Sy, but she has navigated it with determination.
“I think that math is the most challenging for me personally,” she admitted. “But I took the test last year, so I don’t have to take it this year.”
She recommended using past exam papers to understand the level of difficulty and identify common topics, especially for subjects like biology, where intricate diagrams and explanations are expected.
For students preparing to take IB exams for the first time, Sy offers some practical advice.
“Try to prepare a couple of days in advance so that you can do studying in increments,” she advised. “Make sure to get sleep, and just try your best!”
In the midst of the stress and pressure of IB exams, Sy offered a reassuring perspective.
“Even though IB testing can be a really stressful time, in the end, the only thing you lose by testing badly is money,” she said. “So overall, I wouldn’t put more stress on yourself than necessary. Just do your best and get sleep.”
