As Unity Week comes to an end, it is crucial to cover why it is such an important event.
Unity Week is a five-day event hosted by multiple affinity groups, which hold different activities and spirit days. The main idea of Unity Week is to emphasize certain experiences or feelings all high school students share to make Tualatin High School (TuHS) more unified. This year, the main focus of Unity Week was mental health.
Bilal Hourani, a current sophomore at TuHS and Muslim Arab Society (MAS) ASB representative, helped put on Unity Week this year as well as host many parts of it through his club.
“Unity Week focuses on mental health and rewarding people for anything that they do on a day-to-day basis,” Hourani said. “With Unity Week, the main theme is mental health. We’re just focusing on helping others and bringing people together throughout this week.”
This year, Unity Week included events to get all students involved.
“I am excited for the games, especially [because] my club is hosting two of the games,” Hourani said. “We will be hosting duck duck goose and tug-of-war. I feel like that will be fun. You can make new friends[ and] it will be a pretty good bonding time as a school. We can bond with a bunch of people. You will also get fun little rewards and toys as gifts. Unity Week in general is a really good way for people to get to know each other, and it’s going to be games and activities where everyone can have fun.”
Hourani’s enthusiasm on this topic speaks volumes about just how much time and thought has been put into this week-long event. The efforts of all of the affinity groups that helped put on this event have been felt within the spirit days, lunch events and assembly that were included in this year’s Unity Week.
