There’s never a shortage of brunch options in the Portland Area. Instead, a plethora of brunch cuisines to choose from can be found. Whether it be Mexican, Asian or traditional American, the list is endless. We decided to check out Portland favorite Screen Door in downtown Portland on NW Couch St. near Powells.
This cafe serves refined Southern specialties like buttermilk-fried chicken and fish and grits. The menu had plenty of variety, from sweet options like berry french toast to giant cinnamon rolls to savory options like a grain bowl and chicken and waffles.
The ambiance of this restaurant is perfect. It felt so cute and homey, as the decorations made it feel as if we were in South Carolina or Georgia. As the weather is becoming more sunny, there is a wonderful outdoor seating area with heaters. However, there is also plenty of space indoors as well, with bar seating, tables and booths.
The service was top-tier. The waiters and waitresses were so friendly and attended to all of our needs. This brunch option had pretty reasonable prices, considering the bigger portions we got.
Seniors Tallie Fusitua, Lauren Ayers and Helayna Sy all gave their opinions on the dishes they ordered.
Fusitua – Fried Chicken and Biscuits (8/10): Crispy fried chicken breast smothered in country pork sausage gravy or mushroom veggie gravy, served with a fresh-baked buttermilk biscuit and breakfast potatoes.
“I loved the variety of flavors in the dish!”
Mango Lemonade (9.5/10)
“Very refreshing!”
Ayers – Apple Berry Pancakes (9/10): Fluffy ricotta pancakes topped with warm apple rhubarb compote, crunchy oat crumble, and whipped cream.
“The caramelized apples on the top were really good. Portion was pretty big. Overall, a great brunch option!”
Sy – Salad (10/10): Shredded hearty greens tossed with creole mustard vinaigrette. Topped with quinoa, radish, carrot, roasted sweet potato and beets, pickled onions, dried cherries, candied pecans and black-eyed peas.
“The salad was so good, so refreshing. Bigger portion than I was expecting.”
Black Eyed Pea Fritters (10/10): Five falafel-style black-eyed pea fritters served with pepper jelly.
“The pepper jelly was so good. Fritters were very crispy. Perfect texture.”
Overall, Screen Door exceeded every expectation. If you ever find yourself looking for a brunch spot in the Portland area, Screen Door is worth a try! Their original location on East Burnside is also a popular spot.
There are so many local brunch places to choose from, such as La Provence, Biscuits Cafe and Babica Hen, just to name a few. Springtime often allows for nice and sunny brunch dates, so make sure to take advantage of it before it’s too late!
