Multiple school records have been shattered just three meets into track season, and several athletes have set massive career bests in their respective events. At Oregon Relays – the first state-wide invite – these athletes had a chance to prove themselves on a much larger stage at Hayward Field in Eugene.
Hayward Field is known as one of the best tracks in the world, costing well over $250 million and consistently hosting the best professional athletes in the world.
Three Tualatin High School senior athletes had big plans for the meet.
Tyler Craft currently ranks second in Oregon for the triple jump, just half of an inch away from first.
“At the beginning of the season, my goal was to break the school record, and I’ve achieved that goal [with a jump of 45’ 4.75”], so my next goal is to jump 46 feet.”
Craft also explained why Oregon Relays means so much.
“Oregon Relays will be a huge event for our team because it will be a look at what our state team will be like. I’m really hoping we can get a few of our athletes in the top three for their events.”
Carson Page shared similar excitement for our team’s potential at Oregon Relays.
“I am really looking forward to running the 4×800 [at Oregon Relays] – we have a real shot at the school record.”
For Page and others, Oregon Relays was a great opportunity to set a new personal and/or team record.
“So far, our first three meets have been a little disappointing… but things are looking up after the most recent meet at Sunset,” Page said.
Ethan Grimm has broken his own school record multiple times already and currently leads the state in the javelin.
“I broke the school record for a second time with a personal best of 188, and then did it again [in the next meet] with a personal best of 193′ 6″,” Grimm said.
Grimm hoped that Oregon Relays would be the place for him to hit his next milestone.
“At Oregon relays, I’m hoping to place in the top three and throw over 200 feet with a full approach. I’ve been taking [the approach] lightly this season so far to ensure I stay healthy, but at that point, I would like to have gotten comfortable performing at my best,” said Grimm
Oregon Relays had more competition, higher stakes and nicer facilities for all athletes to give their absolute best. With so many athletes expecting great results, Oregon Relays was the main invite to look out for this season.
