Tensions are high during this year’s presidential election between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Both candidates have discussed their stances on major issues voters are concerned about and have led their campaigns with promises to fix the issues that they have prioritized.
The most divisive issues between the two candidates – and their supporters – include economic policy, healthcare rights, violent crime and immigration.
During the September debate between Harris and Trump, the all-too-familiar issue of the economy quickly became a hot topic. This includes things like inflation, unemployment, poverty and climate.
One of Harris’s proposals for tackling inflation is to hold large corporations accountable who use inflation as an excuse for price gouging; these companies have reported record profits. In contrast, Trump has proposed a plan to introduce major tariffs on Chinese imports in an effort to counter foreign competition.
Harris has also put in effort to expand Medicare for individuals — more specifically seniors — who require at-home assistance due to their health. This would include allowing the government to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies in order to reach a lower prices on drugs. Trump, on the other hand, has not yet provided the public with any details for his own plan for healthcare issues.
Continuing down the list of major issues, the stark contrast between the two candidates becomes clearer with their differing promises and solutions. Trump has promised the largest deportation in our country’s history, in addition to the uprooting of “every illegal migrant criminal network operating on American soil.”
Harris, however, focuses on women’s rights, making it clear that she does not intend for any anti-abortion laws to be passed during her term. Trump’s responses on this matter have been inconsistent, making his views unclear.
Plans for housing have been articulated by each candidate. Harris’ solution includes a four-year plan to construct 3 million new homes, as well as to provide $25,000 in down-payment support for first time homebuyers – increasing housing opportunities significantly. In comparison, Trump says that deporting immigrants is the solution to overcrowding.
Overall, this year’s candidates have vastly different visions for America. Kamala Harris has proposed programs to make healthcare and housing more affordable, while promising to protect and reinstate reproductive freedoms. In comparison, Donald Trump’s focus has been centered around promises to fix immigration and the economy. It is up to the American people to decide which candidate’s vision for our future is best for them, and that is why each and every vote matters.
