Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate running for president, has run a campaign focused on increasing economic opportunity, lowering the cost of living, investing in clean energy, making healthcare more accessible, reducing gun violence and supporting democratic and legal processes.
Born on Oct. 20, 1964, in Oakland, Calif., Harris graduated in 1986 from Howard University with a degree in economics and political science. She then attended the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, graduating with a Juris Doctor in 1989. In her career, she has served as the District Attorney for San Francisco, the Attorney General of California, a United States Senator and the Vice President of the United States under the Biden Administration.
Following are some of the most notable statements and policies made on Vice President Harris’s campaign website:
“Under [Harris’] plan more than 100 million working and middle-class Americans will get a tax cut. They will do this by restoring two tax cuts designed to help middle-class and working Americans: the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit… They will also expand the Child Tax Credit to provide a $6,000 tax cut to families with newborn children.
Provide first-time homebuyers with up to $25,000 to help with their down payments, with more generous support for first-generation homeowners.
Expand the startup expense tax deduction for new businesses from $5,000 to $50,000.
Direct her Administration to crack down on anti-competitive practices… by calling for the first-ever federal ban on corporate price gouging on food and groceries, which will build on the anti-price gouging statutes already in place in 37 states.
Make affordable healthcare a right, not a privilege by expanding and strengthening the Affordable Care Act and making permanent the Biden-Harris tax credit enhancements.
Build on the Biden-Harris Administration’s successes in bringing down the cost of lifesaving prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries by extending the $35 cap on insulin and $2,000 cap on out-of-pocket spending for seniors to all Americans.”
Harris has also made the case for being the candidate of the law. In a well-known speech, Harris stated, “As a prosecutor, I specialized in cases involving sexual abuse. Well, Trump was found liable for committing sexual abuse…. As Attorney General of California, I took on the big Wall Street banks and held them accountable for fraud. Donald Trump was just found guilty of fraud on 34 counts…. In those roles, I took on perpetrators of all kinds: predators who abused women, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain. So, hear me when I say: I know Donald Trump’s type.”
*More information can be found on Harris’s official website, including an explanation of how their administration will address their priorities to: “Make Our Communities Safer From Gun Violence and Crime, Secure Our Borders and Fix Our Broken Immigration System, Tackle the Opioid and Fentanyl Crisis, Ensure No One Is Above the Law, Stand With Our Allies, Stand Up to Dictators, and Lead on the World Stage, Invest in America’s Sources of Strength, Support Service Members, Veterans, Their Families, Caregivers, and Survivors.”
