From exploring sciences to learning how to play a new instrument, your doorways to experience are only opening. At the beginning of every school year, we are introduced to new clubs and the creative faucets they provide for students with varying hobbies and interests.
This year is no different, with new clubs including Biology Club, Goth Club, Jesus Pizza, Tualatin Youth Tutors, Guitar Club, Campus Cupboard and Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
One new club – The Campus Cupboard – was created last year by a group of Design Core students looking to make a positive impact on our community. They built and constantly restocked our school-wide cupboard, which provides food and other necessities to students at TuHS. Any student in need is able to visit the cupboard to supplement what’s available to them at home for dinner. This year, students in English classes will be helping to restock the cupboard.
Co-founder Callie Porter explained, “We thought about all of the kids in our community who didn’t have a reliable source of dinner on the weekends. We know school has free and reduced lunches, but what about dinner?”
Another club looking to connect over religion and food is Jesus Pizza. Their mission is to have healthy and raw conversations that people can grow and bond over, while also enjoying a lunch of delicious pizza. Overall, they want to be a safe space for people who are still figuring out their identity, and they are open to any person, no matter their religion.
“Everybody is welcome there, and we really want to create a safe environment where everyone feels like they can be honest and open. We really want to encourage heart-to-heart conversations,” president Amelia Ward explained.
With a new year comes new adventures and new exploration, and this year it has come in the form of fun and creative clubs. Whether you are looking to be more involved in your community or connect with people with similar hobbies, the number of clubs at Tualatin High School is only expanding.
