The College and Career Center in the front of the library has more to offer than simple college visits! Most students know that college application deadlines fall into multiple windows broadly defined as Early Decision, Early Action and regular decision. Here are ways to ease the uncertainty of student debt, one of them being scholarships.
You might be asking, what are scholarships for, and how can I access them? In short, most scholarships are based on either financial need or merit – also known as your accomplishments – to support a student’s educational path, allowing them to further pursue their academic goals.
“There are a plethora of scholarships available to students,” Jess Twede, Tualatin High School’s new librarian, said.
These include academic scholarships, athletic scholarships, scholarships for women, minorities and first-generation students and so many more.
“One of the best ways to find scholarships is to research if the college that you’re interested in offers any in-state or out-of-state scholarships for their incoming students,” Kathy Stallkamp from the College and Career Center said.
The College and Career Center is located in our school’s library. It’s never a bad idea to make an appointment to visit with Stallkamp or Jennifer Butts and see what scholarships you could qualify for.
An additional place to look for scholarships is on Tualatin High School’s College and Career Center website. One of the scholarships available on the list is the Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship, which supports minority students who demonstrate leadership and need financial assistance. Another scholarship shown on the list is the Design Thinking Scholarship, which rewards and encourages students that implement design and creative thinking across various fields.
Be sure to note that most scholarships have deadlines ranging throughout the school year. Others – for example, the Office of Student Access and Completion (OSAC) early bird scholarships – have deadlines in the middle of February.
Here are some steps to help you access the TuHS scholarship list: first, enter the school’s website – https://tuhs.ttsdschools.org. Next, click on the “College and Career Center” link from the “Counseling” tab. Then, hover over the “Paying For College” link from the “College” tab and wait until the “Scholarships” tab appears to the right of the link. Finally, choose either the full scholarship list or the Office of Student Access and Completion scholarship list.
