The NCAA volleyball season has been thrilling so far, and the perfect end to an amazing season is just around the corner. The NCAA women’s volleyball tournament started on Dec. 5, and we are in for quite the ride.
The tournament starts with a field of 64 teams, with 32 receiving automatic qualification. The other 32 teams are selected by the NCAA volleyball committee. The tournament bracket was revealed on Dec. 1, with the first and second rounds starting on Dec. 5-7. Regionals followed on Dec. 12-15, with the semi-finals to back it up. Finally, the national championship will be held this Sunday, Dec. 22.
Many are wondering who the powerhouses are this year, and who might take home the title. Texas is the current two-time champion and is ranked 14th in the nation.
“Repeating is really hard to do,” history teacher and girls’ volleyball coach Steve Rice said. “Nebraska, Penn State and Wisconsin may have something to say about that. And who knows what the Ducks are capable of doing.”
Oregon is ranked 14th, with a current record of 27 wins and 7 losses, which means they are likely to make the tournament. Two highly-anticipated teams are Pittsburgh – ranked 1st – and Nebraska – ranked 3rd – Pittsburg with just one loss.
Along with the teams, there are some key players to watch out for. Freshman Izzy Stark has made herself known as a team leader at Penn State. Averaging over 11 assists a game, Stark has been called one of the best setters in the nation.
Player of the Year candidate Madisen Skinner will be seeking her fourth title this year, having won her first in 2020 with Kentucky. Playing for Texas this year, she’s looking to add another.
“The top players are from Texas and Nebraska, but a former club teammate of my daughter, Sophie Gregoire, plays for the Ducks,” Rice said.
No matter who you’re rooting for, this tournament is sure to hit. Full of upsets and dominant wins, be sure to tune in and watch some amazing volleyball.
