Last month, the tennis community witnessed history at the 2025 Australian Open (AO), an annual prestigious tournament in Melbourne. As one of the four major grand slam tournaments alongside the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, the AO featured men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles — but the singles matches caught the audience’s attention.
USA’s 29-year-old Madison Keys won her first grand slam title, defeating the two-time defending champion and Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) #1 Aryna Sabalenka in the final (6-3, 2-6, 7-5). This huge upset shocked fans, as an unseeded player took out both the #2 and #1 seeds. Keys defeated #2 Iga Świątek in the semi-final.
On the men’s side, defending champion and Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) #1 Jannik Sinner pulled off another win against #2 Alexander Zverev. However, fans weren’t that shocked.
Before the final, fan-favorite Novak Djokovic retired due to a muscle tear in his leg against Zverev after only one set in the semi-final. This conceded the match and confirmed Zverev’s place in the championship game. Fans booed as Djokovic left the court, questioning how serious the injury was, since he has dealt with multiple controversies in the past.
There were some wild upsets in the tournament as well. 18-year-old João Fonseca stunned #9 seed Andrey Rublev, while 19-year-old Learner Tien made an impressive run to the fourth round, knocking out #5 seed Daniil Medvedev in the second. On the women’s side, #3 seed Coco Gauff was defeated by #11 seed Paula Badosa in a close quarterfinal match.
Tualatin High senior and tennis player Jayden Huynh shared his thoughts on his favorite player, Ben Shelton, along with the tournament.
“I was watching Ben Shelton throughout the tournament but was bummed out when the game vs. Sinner was at 2 a.m., so I couldn’t watch it and woke up and he lost,” Huynh said. “Then I stopped caring about the tournament after that but heard Sinner won again.”
Hyunh also mentioned being shocked by Djokovic’s retirement in the semifinals.
“I was also bummed out when Alcaraz lost to Djokovic and was surprised when he retired in his next match against Zverev,” Huynh said. “It was very surprising because I’ve never seen anyone do this in a semi-final. Overall, it was a fun tournament to watch.”
