Are you ever in the mood for a sweet treat but unsure of where to go? Luckily for you, staff writers Olivia Pham and Sophia Ashley rated their favorite local places to get dessert. There were a few places that received an overwhelming response, including Salt & Straw, Handels, Happy Lemon, Starbucks, Kinnamons, Crumbl and Safeway. Our reviews of two favorites – Safeway and Salt & Straw – are below.
We were interested in the selection at the Safeway bakery, so after browsing through the options, we decided on a blueberry lemon cake and a plain chocolate cake. Here were our thoughts:
Ashley: I thought that the cake was very professionally made. Even though it’s just a grocery store, Safeway is a perfect place for a late-night sweet treat. (8/10)
Pham: This was my first time trying cake from the Safeway bakery and I was pleasantly surprised. The chocolate cake was rich and had a whipped cream filling, which was really good.
The blueberry lemon cake was fluffy and had a strong lemon flavor that I enjoyed. (7/10)
We also took a trip to Salt & Straw and brought along one of our classmates. Tualatin High School junior Jamie Mitsuyoshi ordered the Toasted White Chocolate with Peppermint Almonds ice cream. “I would give this a 9/10,” Mitsuyoshi said. “It’s really refreshing and the crunch of the waffle cone goes well with the flavor!”
Pham: I ordered Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons. This is always my go-to flavor and it never disappoints. There is the perfect amount of saltiness, which pairs well with the sweet caramel. (9/10)
Ashley: The Cinnamon Snickerdoodle flavor was the perfect mixture of cookie and ice cream. If you love snickerdoodle cookies, this is the perfect cold treat for you! (10/10)
