Tualatin student-actors performed yet another play on March 7, 8, 14 and 15. Starring senior Mary Grace Simpson as Abigail Williams and junior Braden Fisher as John Proctor, The Crucible is set back in time during the Salem witch trials.
During this scary time, when people believed witchcraft was real, Abigail falls in love and has an affair with John, a married man. In an attempt to steal John from his wife, Abigail falsely accuses his wife of witchcraft. As a consequence of his sin, John has to find a way to triumph over Abigail and clear his wife’s name to save the woman he truly loves. Outsmarting Abigail is one thing, but trying to convince a whole village that what they see isn’t actually witchcraft is the biggest of John’s problems.
Here’s what stage manager Wesley Whaples and actor Braden Fisher, both juniors, have to say about this play.
What’s been your favorite part of working on the play?
Whaples: My favorite part has definitely been being able to see all of our hard work come to life and see the final project take form. It’s so exciting to see our vision in its final product.
Fisher: Mine is probably working the very intense scenes of the play. So many emotions and things are happening all at once, and I enjoy experiencing that.
Why did you decide to become a part of the theater production?
Whaples: Going in, I just wanted to try something new in technology and wanted to learn more about theater, so now I do the technology for all the productions we put on.
Fisher: I really like the plays we put on, and I think the messages and themes portrayed are very interesting to work with.
What do you look forward to as theater continues in the future?
Whaples: I look forward to meeting new people and I can’t wait to have more fun, to laugh more and to have more rehearsals with people who share the same passion.
Fisher: Meeting new people and having diverse performances.
As theater continues to grow as a community, the excitement for their performances continues to grow as well.
