In today’s world, where travel can be both expensive and unrealistic for many, staycations are becoming a popular alternative for relaxation and fun without needing to leave town. Staycations are a great option for those who want to take a break from their busy routines, try new things and visit local attractions, all without the stress of travel or major expenses.
One of the biggest advantages of staycations is the money saved, giving you some room to splurge on activities or dining. Beyond saving money, they allow you to eliminate the long lines at the airport, packing and jet lag, letting you focus on enjoying your much-needed time off without any burdens.
Staycations are a great way to rediscover your city and find things you enjoy doing close to home. The Portland Metro area has so many unique attractions that would be perfect to try during a staycation.
If you like exploring the outdoors, consider taking a hike or a day trip to the beach. If you like art, try taking an art class or visiting the Portland Art Museum. No staycation is complete without well-deserved relaxation, so treat yourself to a spa day or unwind with your favorite book or a yoga class.
Around this time of year, the constant rain can be a bit discouraging, so gather some friends and find some fun indoor activities like going to an escape room, going bowling, going to Wings and Waves Waterpark or taking a trip to OMSI. If you’re looking for a more unique activity, you could go to Hopscotch for an immersive art experience.
On those rare dry days, you could visit the Oregon Zoo, the International Rose Test Garden or Oaks Park, or visit Portland Goat Parties’ Farm and hang out with baby goats.
The key to a perfect staycation is embracing the experience the same way you would on a traditional trip. By setting aside your daily responsibilities and fully allowing yourself to relax and let go, you can receive the same benefits of a vacation without having to leave the city. All a great staycation needs is a little creativity, and your next unforgettable experience could be in your own backyard.
“My family and I like to go to the beach since it’s super close, and we always get saltwater taffy and ice cream even though it’s really cold. The ice cream and cafés are really yummy on the Oregon coast,” said junior Dalia Torres. “We go to the zoo, OMSI, the aquarium, the movies and a lot of things like that.”
