Portland Food Tour: Issue 5, 2019
Local ramen, crepes to gobble up with friends
April 11, 2019
For this edition of our Portland food tour, we stopped by a ramen bar and a creperie for a bite to eat with one of our best pals, Hannah Olson.
Kayo’s Ramen Bar:
This spunky noodle bar in NE Portland is one for the ages. The restaurant’s fun indoor/outdoor environment pairs well with its delectable dishes. Their house-made noodles, the star of their ramen, took 47 tries to perfect- and it shows. Thus, they dubbed the showstopper “Noodle 47.” For dinner, we all ordered the Shoyu ramen, two with pork and bone broth and one with tofu and vegan broth. The broth was seasoned to perfection and the noodles’ texture was sublime. We decided to eat outside in the middle of a particularly frigid February evening, but the intense space heaters and steaming ramen warmed us right up. It was the perfect meal for such a day. The only bad part about the meal was our lack of chopstick skills.
Le HAPPY:
Le HAPPY, located in NW Portland, is a quaint eatery that specializes in crepes. Open until 12 A.M. Monday through Saturday, it is the perfect destination when the late night munchies hit. They had a stellar variety of sweet and savory crepes; however, we opted for the sugary confections only. We enjoyed lemon ginger, Nutella strawberry, lemon strawberry and raspberry chocolate crepes. The “cream of the crepes” were the lemon ginger and raspberry chocolate. We couldn’t get enough of them! Fair warning, the service is quite slow due to their small kitchen, but most of the crepes are worth the wait.
