Leadership is one of the most important factors that goes into a successful team. The girls’ varsity lacrosse team models leadership and loyalty, specifically through their captains: seniors Molly Labhart, Rose Frezza and Addison Dieble.
Labhart described what it means to be a captain.
“Rose and Addi and I want to try and build the freshmen and underclassmen up rather than creating a separation, which is what we’ve had sometimes in the past few years,” Labhart said.
She also explained that being a good captain means encouraging her teammates and being able to give constructive criticism to those who are struggling.
As we move forward into spring sports, our leaders at TuHS continue to step up and be great teammates. Although captains are considered to be role models, everyone on the team can be an asset and a leader, including Piper Findtner, a sophomore on the varsity girls’ lacrosse team. Findtner shared more insight about this team’s dynamic.
“I think lacrosse has shaped me into being a leader because our captains are great role models and we all have a good team dynamic,” Findtner explained.
Findtner also gave insight into what it means to be a good leader. Leaders must be honest and know how to take responsibility, she said. Findtner shared that the family they are building isn’t just within their varsity team, but it is building throughout the whole program.
It takes a lot to be a leader, but these girls have it. It is so important that teammates get along and build lasting relationships, especially in a team sport like lacrosse. With a team full of leaders and three stand-up captains, girls’ lacrosse has a bright season ahead of them. Labhart, Frezza and Dieble are great examples for their team and for the Tualatin community to look up to. They are modeling how to be good teammates and leaders for their team.
It is rare to have such a supportive and uplifting program that encourages athletes while also being able to give feedback and progress as athletes. Constructive criticism and pushing one another are what team sports are all about. It is clear that the future of this program is in good hands with these confident and capable individuals, and we can’t wait to see how far they go this season.
