Major League Baseball (MLB), commonly known as America’s favorite pastime, started its season on March 27, and it is off to an exciting start.
Currently, the San Francisco Giants hold the best record and are 8-1, with big wins over the Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners. The Seattle Mariners are off to a disappointing 3-7 start, holding one of the worst records in the American League. The Mariners are coming off a strong 85-77 season last year, and are hoping to get out of this slump soon.
The American League (AL) is off to a fiery start with 15 MLB teams, including popular teams such as the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. At the top, the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers are dominating. The Yankees are stirring controversy with a new type of bat that makes contact with the barrel more often.
The Rangers are sitting at an 8-2 record and making their dominance known in the West. The AL features arguably the most historic rivalry in baseball, the Boston Red Sox vs. the New York Yankees. These two teams have been competing against each other for over 120 years and absolutely hate each other.
“I am really looking forward to the MLB season as a massive Baltimore Orioles fan,” sophomore Miles Larson said. “I think lots of people should watch baseball because it is an awesome sport, and watching it is the best because it is the best of the best players.”
Larson thinks that the Orioles will make a deep run into the playoffs.
“I think this year the Orioles will win the World Series and the Oregon State Beavers will win the College National Championship.”
The National League (NL) is also off to a great start and has 15 MLB teams, featuring the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers. At the top of the NL, the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers are both dominating the league. The Giants are sitting at 8-1, having the best record in the league and picking up on even more momentum lately. The Los Angeles Dodgers have the second-best record in baseball and are 9-2, with both of the losses to the Philadelphia Phillies in close games.
Almost every team at this point in the season is still in contention for a playoff spot, and this early in the season, it is impossible to tell which teams are impostors and which are legitimate contenders. Even if your team has had a rough start to the season, they still have a chance for magic to happen.
