The Met Gala, formally called the Costume Institute Benefit, is the annual haute couture fundraising festival held for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in Manhattan. The Met Gala is famously regarded as the world’s most prestigious and glamorous fashion event. Here, people can show off their articulated outfits based on the year’s theme. 

The 2025 Met Gala will be held on Monday, May 5, and the chosen theme for this year is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Like all themes, this one can be interpreted in many unique and personalized ways; however, its main focus is on exploring the role of sartorial style in forming Black identities. Creating the theme is a long process that begins way before the actual event, and many take it seriously. 

Ever since the Met Gala first started, countless outfits have been seen on the red carpet in accordance with the theme. However, some outfits that made an appearance weren’t particularly well-received. This caused uproars within the media, generating slander that lasted for weeks. While the Met Gala is a good opportunity to seize the spotlight and show off grand designs, the main focus should be centered around how to express and incorporate the theme into the designs. 

“I think Lana Del Ray captured ‘The Garden of Time’ theme of the 2024 Met Gala perfectly,” said junior Abigail Neuman.

As the Met Gala draws closer, many are excited to see how the designs that are walking the red carpet will reflect the theme.
