In contrast to past years, ASB elections for incoming freshmen are no longer held at the end of their 8th grade year, but have been pushed to the beginning of their freshman year. Previously, elections for the incoming class were held the same week as the high school elections, and results were posted simultaneously. We can expect an even more exciting week back from summer break because, not only will it be the freshmen’s first days of high school, but ASB election week for the Class of ‘29.
“I think it’s just one of those things ASB has to learn how to adjust and pivot around, and I still believe we’re going to have a great year!” ASB officer Sophia Grove said.
Usually, ASB has a bonding retreat, as well as a 15-hours week during which members bond with each other, and get the school ready for the next year. However, without the knowledge of the freshman ASB officers, this next school year will look a little different.
“The summer retreat and 15-hours week are both attempts to make the ninth graders and new ASB members of higher grades feel welcome and excited for the upcoming year,” Grove said, “and we will just have to make up for those bonding moments in different ways throughout the year to have a strong positive dynamic between the students as well as our advisor.”
In addition, there has been a change in the election process for our ASB executive board. The positions of president and vice president (VP) will now be decided with a personal statement, one-on-one interview with Associate Principal Brooke Mayo and a speech to the incoming ASB class. Candidates can no longer just run for VP. All participants will run for president, and the first runner up will receive the position of VP. Running for treasurer and secretary positions requires the same steps, but running for those positions is separated as normal.
“It’s good that the application now requires doing an interview and writing a personal statement because it shows a new level of commitment to the role,” said current ASB treasurer Nina Ichikawa.
While the change may be difficult for some to adjust to, with more committed and passionate candidates running for these executive positions, the growth in the upcoming group of ASB students will be exciting to see.
