As the school year comes to an end, many students are looking ahead to not only summer vacations but also summer jobs. Whether it’s babysitting, working in retail, scooping ice cream or lifeguarding, summer jobs give students a chance to earn extra money, gain experience and build responsibility.
For some, summer jobs are more than just a paycheck but are also a way to explore future careers and interests. Internships, volunteer work and specialized part-time positions can offer insight into healthcare, art, media and many other fields. Even if a certain job doesn’t directly relate to your future goals, it can still be a way to broaden your horizons by getting out of your comfort zone, experiencing new things and learning what kind of work environment suits you best. These roles teach valuable habits that will pay off far beyond high school and push you toward success in the future.
Across the Tigard-Tualatin area, there are many job opportunities to consider. Fast food restaurants like Jamba Juice, Panera Bread and Chipotle are great places to start. Retail stores like Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Old Navy, Hollister and American Eagle offer a fun work environment with flexible schedules. Grocery stores are a great option if you want to work in a more fast-paced environment and learn essential skills like time management, organization and customer service. Safeway, Fred Meyer and Target are all local grocery stores that hire teens.
“I think summer jobs and having to be committed to something can help with time management, responsibility and problem-solving skills,” said junior Mandie Metler, reflecting on the benefits of teen employment.
Summer jobs are a great way to prepare yourself for the future, all while making money at the same time. Think of it this way: the more you work this summer, the more money you’ll have to spend during the school year, save for the future or put in your college fund, so make this summer count.
