Spring fashion inspired by women icons
April 6, 2020
Fashion is universal—however, throughout history, women have used fashion as a means of empowerment and true individual expression. And so, in honor of Women’s History Month, The Wolf wants to recognize the many female fashion pioneers that have played a major role in the way we’ve dressed in the past and present, and how we’ll dress in the future.
Women like Diana Ross, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Beyoncé and Zendaya have all influenced the way in which we perceive and appreciate fashion.
Diana Ross, an American mo-town singer, record producer and actress, has been a frequently-mentioned name when discussing fashion icons throughout history. During her time as a young musician in the ‘60s and ‘70s, Ross showcased a luxurious style overflowing with glamour. Her fashion sense was undeniably classic, yet still stood out in a sea of mute styles on the red carpet due to its extravagance. The most important aspect Ross brought to fashion, however, was her confidence. She flaunted every outfit with unapologetic grace and remained fierce in even the most outlandishly dazzling fits. Her influence in fashion can still be seen today: bold eye makeup, sparkling gowns and colorful fur coats are resonating trends that Ross helped solidify within the fashion world. Celebrities like Solange, Taraji Henson, Beyoncé and Ross’ daughter Tracee Ellis Ross incorporate Ross’s immaculate style into what they wear from the red carpet to everyday looks, showing her long-lasting impact.
Another undeniable pioneer in fashion is iconic ‘50s and ‘60s British actress and humanitarian Audrey Hepburn. Hepburn popularized the “Little Black Dress” and solidified its position as a staple fashion item in every individual’s closet. She never shied away from breaking the plethora of gender stereotypes within fashion; several of her iconic looks being a stylish suit and tie or incorporated items labeled as more “masculine” like button-up shirts and suit pants. Her signature minimalistic and classic style echoes throughout modern fashion trends today, most prominently reflected in trendy teens’ fitted pants and simple turtlenecks. Hepburn’s impact continues to resonate throughout the fashion community, in which her style can be found in many modern celebrities’ styles—like Zendaya—from everyday looks to the red carpet.
However, this wouldn’t be a fashion article if The Wolf doesn’t provide some form of fashion inspiration to take from! So, to tribute these outstandingly stylish women, we’ve created some fits that emulate the essence of the fashion they helped popularize during their time.
Inspired by Diana Ross’s bold and extravagant style is a sparkly gold dress topped with a snazzy cardigan with faux fur accents on the sleeve. With this fit, we strove to encapsulate the luxurious style Ross so confidently owned.
Inspired by Audrey Hepburn’s iconic Breakfast at Tiffany’s look is a simple pencil skirt and a cropped turtleneck tank top. Of course, it would not be a Audrey Hepburn inspired outfit if it didn’t include some accessories. And so the final touch to this outfit is a gold necklace paired with gold and pearl earrings.
These women helped pave the way for women’s fashion in the past. However, women today continue to utilize fashion as a means of empowerment and no doubt dictate the trajectory of the fashion industry with every trend.
