Polish protesters fight for their rights on abortion

Protesters in Poland delay the establishment of a near-total law banning abortion.

Poland’s constitutional court assented that abortion is illegal in the country on Oct. 22. Termination of pregnancy is unconstitutional in cases other than rape, incest, when the woman’s health would be at great risk or when the fetus is permanetly inoperative. Poland’s court has delayed the implementation of the law due to massive protests that have broken out since.

Frightened women’s rights activists protested for the freedom of choice in the streets of Warsaw, Poland since the irrational law was made final and binding. Warsaw’s mayor, Rafal Trzaskowski, charmingly joined the protesters with the intention to fight with them against the unjust hierarchy. The police force later estimated around 100,000 women and men gathered at one point, sharing their outraged opinion. The protests have been generally non-violent, although that does not change the ruthlessness of the protesters’ feelings.

The women in Poland who wish to terminate their pregnancy wouldn’t be charged with criminal acts if they carry on  with that procedure. However, the personnel performing the abortion would face charges, including imprisonment. Polish women may travel to neighboring countries for an abortion procedure if they wish. Although, how could one feel safe to do so knowing it’s a misdemeanor in their home country?

Protests in Warsaw and surrounding cities have collectively brought together around 430,000 tempestuous people to march in what they referred to as a “women’s strike.” It was reported that the original peaceful protest was interrupted by pro-life rioters that began attacking protesters during the march equiped with batons and knives.

It’s appalling that a government can grasp so much control over one’s body. Young women across the globe are fearful for the time when they may not be allowed to choose what they can and can’t do to their own bodies. It’s unjustifiable that any government authority should be allowed to make that type of drastic decision for a woman.

There is so much power protesters hold. Protestors fighting for human rights will always amaze me, the courage and willingness they carry to stand up for what they believe needs to be changed. Polish women and men have come so far along in this fight for a choice that their higher state has postponed the inauguration of the ban.

In its entirety, abortion is a controversal topic with reasons both for or against it, considering the individuals’ morals, experiences, religion or even their significant political party. Our society will always be needing adjustments, and we must be patient. The argument of whether or not abortion should be lawful will continue until the end of time. Unfortunately, people will sway to either side of the debate due to the reasons exhibited before.

The competence protesters hold is valuable and they will not quit until they have the human rights they deserve. There is no question about it.
