New fashion trends emerge in 2024

As we embark on 2024, old fashion trends fall out and new fashion trends arise. Though many of the popular fashion trends from 2023 will stay, there are some new trends emerging this spring. After chatting with some students at Tualatin High School (TuHS), I have compiled a list of various trends that will be coming and going this year.

Trends from 2023 that will stay

Ayda Gower (senior): “The Aritzia Super Puff will definitely still be in trend this season.”

Alexa Mekkers (senior): “Something that will stay is low-waisted jeans and camo. I also think Amazon Aritzia dupes will stay.”

My thoughts:

  • Camo. We have seen a LOT of camo in 2023. It might be ambitious to say it was the most popular trend in 2023, but it was definitely seen a lot at TuHS.
  • Maxi skirts
  • Stripes

Fads students see going out soon

Maddie Hancock (senior): “I think that Nikes and dunks are going out of style and I think Uggs are going to go out quickly since they came in so fast, like the Birkenstock Boston Clogs, but I see them being replaced by a new comfort shoe.”

Ayda Gower: “I think people are going to stop wearing off-the-shoulder, like cutting their shirts to be off the shoulder.”

Alexa Mekkers: “I feel like the colored Adidas sneakers are going to go out.”

Taylor Babicky (senior): “A fashion trend that will leave soon is the bows and the clean girl aesthetic that everyone strives for.”

Emily Ronk (senior): “I think trends that are out are chunky dad sneakers, Nike techs and bootcut jeans.”

My thoughts:

  • Corsets
  • Crop tops will be replaced with longer, fitted shirts.
  • Cloud slides

New trends in 2024

Maddie Hancock: “Honestly, I think tight pants are coming back. Like low-rise tight flares, not necessarily skinny jeans.”

Alexa Mekkers: “I think cheetah print and sherpa will come back this year. I also think darker lip shades will be more popular. In the summer, I think floral prints will be seen a lot more.”

Emily Ronk: “Trends that I think will come in are leopard print, fur coats and lots of denim.”

Aiden Keister (junior): “Boston clogs, jorts and oversized shirts are on the come-up.”

My thoughts:

  • Mini skirts and long boots. This look is super simple and cute, and you can spice it up by layering it with tights.
  • Silver accessories. Gold is not out, but silver is definitely in. I think mixed metals might even become more common this year.
  • Going along with the jewelry theme, charm necklaces are becoming more common. Charm bracelets were huge in the 1950s and ‘60s and reappeared in the early 2000s. Now they are back but in a different form. Charm necklaces are a fun accessory to make your look unique. You can customize them to your liking and add charms that are unique to you, which is super fun.
  • Long coats. I think cropped puffers, jackets and vests had their moment, and it’s finally time for longer coats to reappear.
  • Ear muffs. These beloved ear covers don’t serve any purpose other than looking cute and keeping your ears warm. They are literally headphones that don’t play music. For a more practical purchase, I suggest you just get furry covers for your headphones so they are a bit more functional.

Though there are a lot of trends circulating, it’s important to remember that you don’t have to follow any and every new trend. Whatever makes you feel comfortable, confident and happy is what you should be wearing this year and always.
