How COVID-19 is bringing communities together

The complete transformation of society, as a result of COVID-19, has come as a shock to many. The new and different lifestyle that people all over the world are learning to grow accustomed to has many positives and negatives. While the negative impacts of the virus are extremely apparent and overwhelming, it is important to appreciate the positives during this uncertain time.

Government-ordered social isolation has kept people in their houses and off roads; and therefore, pollution levels are on a downward slope, which is a major positive of this situation. In addition, busy families have an abundance of time for some quality bonding. Most surprising of all, the social distancing practiced by most has ironically brought communities together.

There are videos swarming social media of communities in Italy where citizens are singing on their balconies with each other. People also step outside to applaud their neighbors, who are healthcare professionals and essential workers, as they leave for their shifts. Statistics show that over half of people are reporting that they have felt closer to their neighbors during this time.

Because elderly people are especially susceptible to COVID-19, people are volunteering to buy them groceries or run errands. Many grocery stores have implemented a senior shopping time, where seniors have more of a risk-free environment to shop in, while the stores are less busy. Communities are obviously considering this time for other people and taking precautions to ensure as much safety as possible.

People in professions who are working to keep everyone taken care of during this time are not going unnoticed. Many healthcare workers are deservingly receiving appreciation and gratitude. People with jobs that are normally overlooked are finally being recognized for their hard work, as well. For example, many grocery store baggers are receiving extra compensation because they are working in these potentially hazardous times.

As this virus passes through, make the most of this situation by appreciating the positives and looking for ways to create more positives for others. While this situation is not ideal, the whole world is experiencing the exact same thing, which brings everyone together to form one giant community.
