From a perfectly rolled uramaki to a roll that tastes questionably fresh, not all sushi places are the same. Wolf editor Nethra Balakumar, along with sophomore Anna Sethi and senior Durham Hudspeth, visited places near our school to taste and rate them so you know where to go.
Akira Sushi
Balakumar: “I love the texture of it, and I think the sweetness makes it taste so much better. You can also tell that it’s fresh.” 7/10
Hudspeth: “It’s very mushy. The avocado and crab salad blend together.” 4/10
Sethi: “It’s really sweet. I think it’s a little too sweet, but I would say 6/10.”
Sushi Hana
Balakumar: “They are rolled up really nicely. I think I would give it a 5/10. It tastes mediocre.”
Hudspeth: “These look a lot nicer. It’s like a rice cake, all mushed together. If it had more filling, it would be better.” 3/10
Sethi: “I feel like this one is softer than the other one. It tastes kind of normal. I’m not too surprised by it.” 6.5/10
Fred Meyer
Balakumar: “I feel like this one is not as bad. I think I like it better than the Sushi Hana.” 5/10
Hudspeth: “The crab is a lot worse, but I like the taste of wasabi.” 4/10
Sethi: “It definitely tastes like store quality. The rice is different from the others. It’s much more separated. It does not taste fresh. I would give it a 5/10.”
Toro Sushi
Balakumar: “It tastes really fishy. You obviously expect to taste the crab salad, but it definitely overpowers the taste of cucumber, avocado and rice.” 5/10
Hudspeth: “It has a lot of sesame in it, which is nice. It has a lot more filling. This is by far the best one. I give it an 8/10.”
Sethi: “It tastes kind of salty. It’s not bad, but it’s also not absolutely fabulous.” 6.5/10
After going to various establishments, we found that every place adds their own spin on the rolls. Depending on if you prefer sweetness, mushiness, or the taste of wasabi, you’ve got options in Tualatin.
