Nearing the 100-year of Academy Awards, the 98th Oscars were held last month, hosted by Conan O’Brien.
With a nearly mile long list of awards, some highlights from the show included the awards earned by the film Sinners directed by Ryan Coogler, which set a record with 16 nominations, making Oscars history and surpassing the previous record of 14 shared by All about Eve (1950), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016). Sinners also set a record for most Black individuals nominated for a single film with 10 nominees. Notably, Micheal B. Jordan won “Actor In Leading Role” for his work in Sinners, which many fans saw as Jordan finally getting his flowers for spectacular acting.
Sinners’ production studio, Warner Bros, ultimately won 11 Oscars – for Weapons, four for Sinners and six for One Battle After Another, tying it for the most wins for a studio in a single year.
In further recognition of this year’s acting, at only 30 years old, Timothee Chalamet became the youngest actor to win three acting nominations since Marlon Brando, as well as the youngest person to be nominated for production and acting awards in the same year, surpassing Warren Beatty. Additionally, the 40-year span between Amy Madigan’s first nomination for Twice in a Lifetime (1985) and her current nomination for Weapons set the longest gap between Oscar nominations for an actress. With his win for One Battle After Another, Adam Somner has became the second producer to posthumously win Best Picture, following Sam Zimbalist in 1959.
Fans from Tualatin High enjoyed the annual award show.
“The intro was interesting,” said sophomore Clover Taylor. She enjoyed the Oscars, especially the bits and jokes that were present throughout the performance.
“Why are there so many Michael B. Jordans?” she said.
