You’re sitting in third period, your teacher hands you your test, and all you can hear is the clock on the wall. It’s silent in the room — deadly silent. You ask to go to the bathroom, only to find four people sitting in there talking. Then the unimaginable happens. You need to fart.
Has this happened to you? If not, you’re fortunate (and a liar). Everybody has farted before, so what is with the initial response of shock and disgust? What is the difference between a burp and a fart? To what extent is it okay to fart in a public space?
I asked these questions to my friends, and most of them responded with the same “I don’t fart ever blah blah blah” shmuck. But some gave it genuine thought, and their responses made me think.
Some said that it’s scary to fart, but it needs to be normalized in society and that they wouldn’t do it personally, but wouldn’t care if it was done in a bathroom. It made me think that maybe the reason for the disgust is not the actual action itself, but rather the setting of the fart. If you were to rip one in class, most people would laugh at you. However, if you farted in a bathroom, people would understand. I believe that if you need to fart, then fart, but others might disagree.
Some also said that it just stinks and that’s gross, and the sound of a fart makes you think “what the flip.” I agree with this because, when I hear a fart in class, while I do understand and not make a big deal out of it, I also do think, “Ew, that stinks.” I think that you should just keep it to yourself, though, because embarrassing someone by insulting their fart is messed up, in my opinion, as they’re most likely already embarrassed by farting.
That same friend also brought up how girls…don’t fart, and the fact that the idea that girls do fart exists is just so sad because girls don’t fart. Boys fart and girls do not fart.
All in all, while it is gross to fart in class, the main consensus is that it should be allowed in the bathroom without judgment, as long as it isn’t, like, an evil fart. Therefore, there’s nothing to worry about. Fart if you want; remember to be free. FART FOR FREEDOM.
