The holiday season is widely recognized as a time to reconnect, strengthen bonds and embrace a sense of community, regardless of one’s background or identity. Even though traditions may look different across communities, many reflect similar values. While these values share a similar foundation, it’s the way in which they are interpreted and expressed that varies across cultures, giving each tradition its own unique aspects.
Each individual’s experience reflects a set of shared values among cultures, and the way in which we interact with unfamiliar traditions can shape our own perspective and form our awareness of the ways others connect with traditions and identities based on that shared foundation. Recognizing the shared values that exist between cultures, while appreciating the diversity that exists within communities, creates a foundation for inclusion and connection.
As society continues to shift and diversify, it becomes evident that our own values are not directly tied to any one culture. The growing presence of immigrant communities across the country reflects the influence that many of these traditions have, especially throughout the holiday season. Of the many festivities that occur throughout the holiday season, for example, Christmas and Hanukkah seem different on the surface, but these celebrations are centered around similar values: connecting with others, strengthening relationships and community and expressing gratitude.
Looking beyond our own traditions allows us to appreciate the many ways others interpret and express their beliefs, showing that different cultural practices can be connected by the same underlying ideas.
Engaging with different cultural practices serves as a way to reflect on our own practices and the values behind them, while gaining a better understanding of how others interpret and embrace their own. It offers a chance to connect with others and appreciate the different ways people express their beliefs and values. Acknowledging the variety of traditions in individuals and communities creates an environment where acceptance and understanding can grow.
Regardless of one’s differences, the reality is that many of our differences share a similar foundation. Among the many cultural practices that take place throughout the holiday season, many view it as a time to connect with their values and beliefs, encourage connection, community and strengthen bonds. Approaching this time of the year with an inclusive mindset reinforces the importance of creating an environment in which everyone feels respected and valued. It reflects what the season means for many: a time to connect with others while embracing unique differences.
