A parking spot in the south lot is available for purchase to juniors and seniors for $50 throughout the year. At the price of $50 for each parking spot, it really makes you think. Keeping a clean environment with custodial staff ensuring trash is emptied, freshly painted numbers and lines and camera supervision of your vehicle is all very awesome, but why have no traffic regulations been enforced by staff to ensure student safety?
Students who work directly after school face anxiety when leaving the parking lot; speeding to leave endangers not only themselves, but pedestrians attempting to get to their vehicles. I couldn’t tell you the number of times I’ve almost been run over just trying to get to my car, and to me, this is a very serious issue that should be considered.
As a senior, during my four years, I have heard of other students being injured in the parking lot due to someone else’s carelessness. And while I’m sure they had their repercussions, no action has been taken to prevent this from happening to someone else.
Anyone who has been delayed past 10 minutes has seen how staff usher out the buses (who did not pay $50, mind you) before a quarter of the parking lot can leave the school. This is insane to me! With that effort, there ought to be someone directing traffic to allow students to leave without incident or anxiety.
But, for now, please try to be mindful of your surroundings and stick to 5 mph when leaving! You aren’t getting anywhere sooner, and you are prone to keying attacks. Be mindful.
