The fast-approaching release of Wicked: For Good is exciting new and old fans throughout Tualatin High School (TuHS). The movie will follow the same plot as the second half in the famous Broadway musical Wicked. Part one of this film adaptation follows the story of Elphaba and Glinda, whose enemies-to-friends development holds a tremendous presence throughout the story. It also explores themes of self expression, love, morality, perception and, of course, magic.
Students at TuHS have mixed feelings about the movie being split into two parts. Some say they respect the format, as it reflects how most musicals are split into two halves, with an intermission between the two. However, some students feel this “intermission” of one whole year is a bit too long to wait, while others argue that it takes time to make a film that could ever live up to the musical’s second half.
“I feel like it works out because, if it had just been in one movie, it’d be too much… and they recorded it all within the same year, so I feel like it plays out very well,” junior Mitca Juarez Nava said.
It seems that, overall, TuHS students are noticeably excited for the release of Wicked: For Good, but which grade level is actually going? After asking different students from varying grade levels it’s evident that the Senior Class will be purchasing movie tickets left and right as they fill up every theater alongside the Sophomore Class. Both grades look to be on the edge of their seats for the final part of Wicked.
One long-time admirer of the Broadway musical has thoughts on whether the songs in the live action movie are as good as the original performances.
“I do think they are good renditions, but I think the differences are kind of off-putting, considering it’s such a famous musical, sophomore AJ Whaples said. “But I think they will continue to be good renditions in the second half. It will be interesting to see how they finish it off because it’s so popular.”
