Our Tualatin High School Cheer team recently won the National Championship Title at the Anaheim Convention Center in California! We asked one of the seniors on the team, Elizabeth Kleps (17), a few questions regarding her experience at the competition and after.
Did you score higher than last year? Why do you think so?
“At both state and nationals we did not score higher than last year. One reason for this is that the state score changed from being out of 110 points to 105 points. At nationals, our score was around the same as previous years, but we competed in Varsity Show Cheer Advanced rather than Intermediate, which made the competition more challenging.”
What was your favorite part of Nationals and why?
“My favorite part of Nationals was being able to come together, not only as a team but also as a family. We spent a lot of time together, including sharing meals, which helped us bond and strengthen our teamwork. I believe that connection played a big role in our success.”
Were there any schools that impressed you with their routine and why?
“Maple Mountain High School from Utah was one of our biggest competitors and really impressed me with their routine. Their team performed three running fulls, which is very impressive for a high school team and demonstrated a high level of skill and difficulty.”
What did the team do to celebrate the dub?
“To celebrate the win, our team went to Disneyland together. We were able to enjoy many rides, eat great food and spend time celebrating as a team. We also took pictures throughout the park with our medals to remember the experience.”
Finally, as a senior, what was your favorite part of your cheer career and why?
“One of my favorite parts of my cheer career was being able to cheer alongside my older sister during my first two years on varsity. We had the opportunity to compete together at both State and Nationals, which made the experience especially meaningful. I also loved winning State last year and again this year. Those moments are memories I will always cherish.”
Winning championships back-to-back is something that these athletes will never forget. Thanks to their dedication, it’s clear that Tualatin High School won’t forget it, as well.
