The 2026 NBA trade deadline was one of the most interesting of the last few years. Before the Feb. 5 deadline, multiple All-Stars and franchise players were moved, which reshaped many teams around the league.
The uncertainty of the deadline caused fans to hold their breath until it passed. Many teams around the league were pursuing Giannis Antetokounmpo, one of the faces of the NBA, and many trade decisions revolved around the hope of him hitting the market. That didn’t happen this time around, but other big deals were made instead.
“The NBA trades this year feel like somebody playing NBA 2K26 on easy mode and just hitting accept without reading anything. Teams are swapping players like Pokémon cards and acting surprised when the new guy still has to learn how to dribble with his teammates. But hey, that’s just me,” said Riley Wacker, senior.
The Washington Wizards acquired Anthony Davis from the Dallas Mavericks, and Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks. Washington has been a bit of a black hole for star players over the last decade, so time will tell how the new pair fits with the team.
“Another team that had an interesting trade was the Washington Wizards in acquiring both Trae Young and AD,” said Jack Baxter, senior.
Another major deal sent James Harden to the Cleveland Cavaliers. This was one of the strangest moves of the deadline because the Clippers dismantled their core group of stars, effectively creating a self-inflicted handicap, for no apparent reason.
Some contending teams also made big upgrades. The Golden State Warriors added Kristaps Porziņģis, filling their desperate need for a stretch big to strengthen their frontcourt.
The Boston Celtics added Nikola Vučević, which many think is a strange addition to the team.
“I think so many blockbuster trades have happened the last couple years that that has become the norm. That made this year seem really quiet, but there were teams like the Wizards, Hawks and Dallas who still restructured a lot of their team looking for a bright future,” said Connor McMillen, senior.
