Winter is coming, and so is basketball. With the football season having recently ended, we’re ready to get on the court and watch our Timberwolves go to work. With both the girls’ and boys’ teams coming off great seasons last year, we hope to see a couple of new additions to our banners hanging up in the rafters by the end of this year.
Both teams are showing some incredible talent this year and we are excited to see how the freshman and JV teams develop this season. Junior Damian Olvera gave insight for the upcoming boys’ varsity season.
“Our record last year was 22-7, and this season we are among the favorites to win a state championship. Last year we had aspirations of the same thing but fell short in the Chiles Center, so we’re definitely making sure we are more prepped and prepared to play well when it counts most.”
Though the boys’ squad came close, the girls were successfully able to close it out with a big win at the end of last season, adding a new championship to the trophy case. A lot of pressure comes with being the defending champs. Senior Ries Miadich has insight on the team.
“I’m feeling really good going into this upcoming season,” Miadich said. “At practice you can tell our team wants to win just as much, if not more than we did last year. I think winning a state championship the way we did made us understand what it actually takes to be champions. Now that we understand what it takes to win it all, I’m hopeful we can go back to back.”
With each game this season being just another step towards the title, it won’t be easy making it to the top. The Three Rivers League has some strong opponents on each side of the ball. West Linn has always been a strong contender and Lake Oswego is looking to improve from last season. While Tigard has some hoopers, none of them truly compare to the Timberwolves.
The players have been preparing since the spring, and the fans have patiently awaited the return of the teams. Now we wait. Every game, every timeout, every free throw and every buzzer beater we wait and watch as the season progresses. So I ask that all of you reading this go and stand by your teams. Support from the start will give the players the morale they need to keep fighting later on and push for the finals.
