Portland Trail Blazers fans are in shock after Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was arrested by the FBI in an illegal gambling incident involving the mafia in November.
The charges allege Billups took part in a mob-linked poker ring and shared insider information with bettors about certain players and the league. Billups has been placed on an indefinite leave from the Blazers, and now interim head coach Tiago Splitter has taken his place.
Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and former player Damon Jones were also arrested in connection with the incident.
“I think it’s going to affect the league a ton, and not only the Blazers,” senior Xander Silliman said. “It kind of sets the stage for more FBI investigations into other players and coaches for the same type of stuff. It’ll be interesting to see how other players handle it, because a lot of the NBA is publicity driven. Some of it has been good. The Blazers have had a lot more interest after the whole debate, too.”
Many are unsure what the fallout could be, both for the Blazers and the NBA. Stricter oversight and restrictions could follow surrounding gambling and sports betting in the league. The concerning part for many fans is that the people alleged to be involved would not have made very much money in proportion to the amount they’re already worth, which raises questions about why such a thing would ever happen to begin with.
“I think it’s crazy that extremely wealthy and successful people like Chauncey Billups would take part in such a low level act,” senior Connor McMillen said. “He had everything to lose and nothing to gain from this shady side hustle.”
